RC Late Nights: Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May 24, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
**NOTE: This RC Late Night will be held from 6:00-7:30PM, instead of the usual RC Late Night time.**
Join the Rainbow Center as we recognize Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month by welcoming UTOPIA Seattle, an organization whose mission is to create a safe space for Pacific Islander LGBTQI communities in advocating for social justice, education and overall wellness.
UTOPIA Seattle’s core work is founded on inclusivity, justice, and equality for Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and families, and serves as a convener and bridge-builder between two distinct communities by working to elevate the issues and perspectives of Pacific Islanders within the broader LGBTQ+ community and vice versa.

About Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific Islander encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
